A K M Mahmudul Hoque Alif

Mr. A K M Mahmudul Hoque Alif is a Barrister of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn whose practice is centred on civil and commercial disputes, corporate and financial litigation, banking matters, dispute resolution and strategic legal advisory work.

Educated and professionally trained in the United Kingdom, Mr. Alif brings an international perspective to legal practice while maintaining a strong understanding of the commercial, institutional and practical realities of the Bangladeshi legal environment.

He obtained his LL.B. (Hons) from the University of the West of England, UK, before pursuing advanced postgraduate legal study through an LL.M. at City St George’s, University of London. He subsequently completed his Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) at City St George’s, University of London and was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.

Mr. Alif serves as Legal Advisor to the Bangladesh API Manufacturers and Intermediaries Association (BAIMA), representing 12 reputed companies in Bangladesh’s API sector. Through this role, he has contributed to legal, financial and policy-related initiatives involving key institutions, including Bangladesh Bank and the Ministry of Finance, strengthening his experience at the intersection of law, finance, regulatory affairs and institutional policy.

His interest in dispute resolution developed early in his legal career. While pursuing his undergraduate legal studies, he qualified as an Accredited Civil Commercial Mediator with ADR ODR International, giving him an early appreciation of the importance of resolving disputes not merely through confrontation, but through negotiation, commercial judgment and carefully structured solutions.

Today, his practice reflects that combination of advocacy and problem-solving.

Mr. Alif advises and represents clients in a broad range of civil, commercial, corporate, banking and financial disputes. His areas of practice include Civil and Commercial Corporate Litigation, Banking and Financial Litigation, Investment Banking Litigation, Company Matter Litigation, Artha Rin Disputes, Property and Inheritance Disputes, Family Disputes, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Civil Commercial Mediation and Arbitration.

His work also extends beyond conventional courtroom litigation. He is engaged in contract, instrument and policy drafting and vetting, institutional legal advisory work, and the formulation and analysis of policies concerning financial institutions and government institutions. He advises on disputes and transactions where legal considerations intersect with commercial strategy, banking structures, corporate decision-making and institutional policy.

A particular area of his professional interest lies in banking, finance and commercially sensitive disputes, where the legal issue often forms only one part of a broader financial or business problem. His approach is therefore focused not merely on identifying what the law provides, but on understanding the client's commercial position, evaluating the surrounding risks and developing a practical legal strategy.

Mr. Alif places significant emphasis on legal analysis, opinion writing, drafting, contractual interpretation, regulatory analysis, dispute strategy and negotiation. He approaches each matter with the view that effective legal representation requires clarity of thought, careful preparation and an understanding of the client's larger objective.

His training as both a Barrister and a Mediator has shaped a practice philosophy that recognises an important distinction: not every dispute needs to be prolonged, but every dispute needs to be properly understood. Where a commercially sensible resolution is possible, he places equal value on negotiation, mediation and strategic settlement.
